What happening?
Cowboys Keys For Success
1. Show up: The Redskins showed in their 45-12 loss to the Giants that they have mailed it in for the season. With the hiring of Bruce Allen as VP of football operations and the likely firing of coach Jim Zorn, the players are much more concerned with their own personal agendas than winning a football game. The Cowboys need to take the same approach they did last week with New Orleans, which is to come out with a strong, aggressive, attacking approach and let the Redskins know they have no chance to win the game. Against the Saints, the Cowboys scored a touchdown on their first offensive possession for the first time since Thanksgiving 2008. Use a similar approach, and they'll have a showdown with Philadelphia for the NFC East title next week.
2. Hope Suisham is mentally ready: The Cowboys finally cut Folk, who had missed seven of his last 11 field goal attempts, and signed Suisham. Ironically, Suisham spent much of the season with the Redskins until he missed a 24-yarder that helped the Saints remain undefeated at the time. He also missed two field goals in a 7-6 Dallas victory earlier this season. Those were the only three misses in 21 field goal attempts this season. Folk had missed at least one kick in each of the last six games. It won't be hard for Suisham, who kicked in six games for the Cowboys in 2005 and 2006, to do much better.
3. Maintain offensive balance: Too many times this season, offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has struggled with finding the right balance between running and passing. He found it last week against the Saints -- Dallas had 36 runs and 34 passes -- and he needs to keep it. Balance also entails getting receivers other than Miles Austin and Jason Witten involved, which happened against New Orleans when Kevin Ogletree, John Phillips and Sam Hurd each had key fourth-quarter receptions. Marion Barber and Felix Jones combined for 31 carries and 120 yards. That kind of balance makes it hard for opponents to stop an offense, because they can't load up on one side of the ball.
Redskins Keys For Success
1. Contain the edge. Dallas' outside linebackers, Ware and Anthony Spencer, controlled the outside and also pressured quarterback Jason Campbell in the first game. It could get ugly this time. Both Ware and Spencer play the run well, which means the tight ends, Fred Davis in particular, must have a good game blocking. That did not happen in the first meeting.
2. Stop the big play. One reason Washington nearly beat Dallas in the first game is that the defense limited Dallas' offense to only two pass plays of 20 yards or more, and none over 25. Landry must play disciplined. If cornerback DeAngelo Hall is healthy, the Redskins match up well with Dallas' receivers.
3. Negate the size. Dallas has a big size advantage offensively and can engulf Washington's linebackers, London Fletcher in particular, and defensive end Andre Carter, if he can play with his biceps injury. The defensive tackles must occupy the blockers enough to let Fletcher read the play and use his quickness. Carter and Orakpo have a speed edge on Cowboys left tackle Flozell Adams and will try to create gaps with their alignment.
