What happening?
Mike Singletary gave Alex Smith a strong endorsement this week despite the quarterback's subpar effort in Philadelphia. Smith clearly is the favorite to start the 2010 season for the 49ers, but he still needs all the playing time he can get. Smith has an opportunity to finish the season with momentum. His final two games are against Detroit and St. Louis, which rank 32nd and 29th in defense respectively. ...
Detroit, meanwhile, could get rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford back after he aggravated a shoulder injury on Dec. 6. The Lions would like to see their prized rookie finish the season, but they also got a nice effort last week from Drew Stanton. The Lions scored 24 points in the second half against Arizona with Stanton in the game, tying the score twice before losing on a late touchdown. ...
The 49ers have a tough decision to make after the season about cornerback Nate Clements, whose salary is due to jump considerably in 2010. Two years ago, Clements signed the biggest contract ever for a defensive player. But he lost his starting job Nov. 1 in Indianapolis then broke his shoulder while returning a punt in the same game. How well Clements' fellow cornerbacks � especially Shawntae Spencer and Tarell Brown � play at the close of the season will help determine whether the 49ers can afford Clements next season.
