On January 29, 2010, fine art photographer James Schot, with the support of the Broward Cultural Division, has the world premier of his exhibit entitled Aurora w/Eos.
To understand and fully appreciate this body of work, art lovers only need to consider the foundation of all his photographic masterpieces. They are created in camera, each on one single canvas of film, or with respect to the Auroras, each photograph is created of one digital image file. This is a simple explanation for what are often complex creative processes.
James holds to the definition of photography, and that a photograph is taken with a camera and not with a computer. Since his work would challenge the skills of the most capable professional photographers, it is often confused by the untrained eye to be digital fine art. (There are several recognizable differences between fine art photography and digital fine art, and they will be explored in an article on James’ blog: www.bestschot.com/
The Aurora w/Eos series is aptly titled. In an interview, James states that photography means to paint with light. The Auroras, in astronomy, are also known as the northern and southern lights, and are the result of solar winds of charged particles bombarding the atmosphere guided by the earth’s magnetic fields, resulting in luminous bands and streamers. You can view it as heavenly light painting. Eos is the Greek goddess of dawn who opened the gates of heaven. Total control over light, in part, makes this series possible.
These exciting and totally unique photographs were completed by James working with fiber optics in otherwise total darkness--their presentation calling for newly developed LED framing specifically designed for each piece.
