What happening?

Quarterback renaissance: Two down-and-out quarterbacks are back. Coach Tom Cable says Charlie Frye is still his starter if healthy, but that's iffy with Frye is coming off a concussion. Just when it appeared JaMarcus Russell could sink no lower, he came off the bench to lead the Raiders to a thrilling win at Denver. Mostly, Russell's play has been poor with his luck bad, but his fortunes turned after Frye went down with a concussion in the fourth quarter. First, Russell survived a sack and a fumble on the first play of his game-winning drive when the Broncos were nailed for pass interference on the next play. Then, he went 4-for-8 for 43 yards, firing a 10-yard TD strike to wideout Chaz Schillens with 35 seconds left in what became a 20-19 win. Ousted Browns QB Derek Anderson is back under center after Brady Quinn's foot injury on the last play against Kansas City has him sidelined for the next two weeks. It will be Anderson's sixth start of the season. ...

Coaching credibility: Cable hit rock bottom in mid-November, losing at home to the Chiefs to put his two-year record at 6-17, including 2-7 through nine games in 2009. Since then, Cable has led the Raiders to a 3-2 record, with wins over playoff contenders Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Denver. Cable needs to do no worse than split his remaining two games to maintain momentum, and his better bet is to win at Cleveland, with a home game against Baltimore up next. Cable is in better shape than Browns coach Eric Mangini, whose fate will be determined by a new football operations czar. Mangini gave himself hope with wins over Pittsburgh and Kansas City the last two Sundays, but a 1-11 start in which the team looked like a mess might doom him. Mangini probably needs to win home games against the Raiders and Jaguars to have a fighting chance at staying. ...

Emerging stars in the backfield: Jerome Harrison rushed for 60 yards as a 2006 rookie, 142 yards in 2007 and 246 yards in 2008. That certainly begs the question of where on earth Jerome Harrison's 286-yard game at Kansas City came from. Perhaps it was a simple matter of opportunity. With Jamal Lewis on injured reserve, the shifty little scatback got hot against the Chiefs and wound up with 34 carries. He had 34 carries all told in the 2008 season. Sure, Harrison took advantage of an inept K.C. run defense, but going into last weekend, Oakland's run defense was ranked 30th, just behind the Chiefs. Suddenly, Harrison is playing for a big contract he can be an unrestricted free agent after the season. Oakland's Michael Bush likewise has been trying to prove hes worth a bigger workload. Given a career-high 18 carries at Denver, the 6-1, 245-pounder delivered 133 yards. Bush's size-speed combination is reminiscent of a young Lewis. This is in contrast to Harrison, a quick-cut artist.
