As entry into colleges, as well as private high schools becomes increasingly competitive, students need to find the best academic mentors to guide them through standardized tests. Varsity Tutors continues its mission of offering a wide range of tutoring services with its AP, HSPT, and ISEE test prep programs. The company’s tutors are rigorously screened for excellent communication skills, great academic records, and high test scores. Having taken the test themselves, they can easily relate to and teach students the fundamentals.
The Varsity Tutors model
Flexible Schedules: you choose the tutoring time
Convenient Locations: you choose the tutoring location, be it your house, a public library, a coffee shop, etc.
Experienced Tutors: Varsity Tutors’ directors hand-pick the tutor who will be matched to the student, ensuring the best level of service
Advanced Placement (AP) Exams
AP Exams are offered the first two weeks of May every year to high school students. Administered by the College Board, the 37 different AP exams range from Art History to Statistics to World History. Students are encouraged to take the exams after having taken a school-year AP level class. The exams are scored on a scale of 1-5, and many colleges grant credit to students who score at least a 4. Preparation via practice questions as well as guidance from a tutor are highly recommended. Varsity Tutors’ AP exam tutors are required to have scored a “5” on the exams they tutor, as well as excellent teaching skills.
High School Placement Test (HSPT)
The HSPT is used by many independent schools for placement into 9th grade. This 2.5 hour test is given to 8th graders, and can only be taken once. The five sections of the test are: Verbal, Quantitative, Reading, Mathematics, and Language. There is also a Pre-HSPT offered to 7th grade students. The tests are administered independently by schools, and parents are encouraged to contact the school they are interested in for test dates. Varsity Tutors’ HSPT tutors offer specific guidance to students looking to score well on the HSPT.
Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE)
Much like the HSPT, the ISEE is used by independent and private schools to place applicants. The three levels of the ISEE are:
Lower, grades 4-5
Middle, grades 6-7
Upper, grades 8-11
The five sections of the ISEE are: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics Achievement, and Essay writing. Students may only take the ISEE once during any six-month period, making good preparation that much more important. Test dates are determined by the independent schools themselves.
