The Annapolis Environmental Stewardship Certification Program is one of a select few municipal certification and verification programs that have been developed in the United States. It was established in Spring 2009 by the City of Annapolis and the Department of Neighborhood and Environmental Programs in partnership with the Downtown Annapolis Partnership and the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Conference and Visitors Bureau. The Environmental Stewardship Certification program is just one aspect of the Sustainable Annapolis initiative, which seeks the involvement of businesses and citizens to help transform the City of Annapolis into a sustainable, carbon neutral city and protect and improve the environmental health of its neighborhoods and watersheds.
Through the Environmental Stewardship Certification Program, staff and management of area businesses receive free training and information to help them identify and adopt environmentally friendly practices appropriate to their line of business. Some of the other businesses involved to date include restaurants, hotels and motels, auto repair shops, retail stores, and office buildings.
The Annapolis Environmental Stewardship Certification for Automotive Establishments is available to auto repair shops, sales/dealerships, service stations, and car washes. The program has developed a comprehensive checklist of environmentally sustainable safety and conservation practices specifically for auto-related businesses. The recommended measures address water conservation, pollution prevention, safe storage and disposal of tires, batteries, and scrap metal, and the use, reuse and recycling of less toxic chemicals whenever possible.
To qualify for the two-year certification, Rich Morton Washington DC Ford (www.richmorton.com)
The leadership they have displayed in environmental stewardship and their commitment to the Annapolis community will be recognized on the websites of the City of Annapolis, the Downtown Annapolis Partnership and Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Conference and Visitor’s Bureau and through a certificate and decal displayed at the dealership.
