THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF.--The Conejo Valley YMCA (4031 N. Moorpark Rd., Thousand Oaks) serves Thousand Oaks and Moorpark. The Miller Family YMCA (320 Via Las Brisas) serves Newbury Park. "The pools are heated, we've got great instructors and the there aren't the summer crowds. It's a great time to learn to swim," says Nancy Kirkpatrick Reno, Conejo Valley YMCA aquatics director, United States Masters Swimming 2009 Coach of the Year and chairman of Southwest Zone of Masters Swimming "Besides learning valuable skills, swim lessons keep kids active throughout the winter months." Classes are offered in group and private lessons.
YMCA swim teams are also seeking participants. The Conejo Sharks and Miller Manta Rays are divided into age groups--ages five to 17. Swim team members work on perfecting their strokes, increasing endurance, building strength and learning to be a team member. Teams compete in swim meets with other Ys. Participants must meet minimum skill requirements to be part of the swim team.
