Heading home for the holidays? Don't forget to pay attention to winter skin care. It’s a must during a season when stress and harsh weather can transform even the dewiest face into the Grinch.
Michelle Peck, Healer and Skincare Professional with Intraceuticals and frequent flyer with celebs on tour, such as Madonna, offers this advice:
“Air travel severely dries the skin at the deeper layers and this really makes the skin look tired and dull. To prevent this I recommend an Intraceuticals Infusion treatment before flying and use the Rejuvenate Hydration Gel ($89) followed by a layer of Rejuvenate Moisture Binding Cream ($89) during flight and as soon as you land. Layering really seems to be the key to keeping the skin hydrated during flight,” says Peck. www.intraceuticals.com.
“Try regular spritzing with Instant Boost Skin Tonic Spritzer ($21.50). Refreshing, calming and revitalising, this heavenly scented toner is loaded with reviving botanicals, spirit-lifting essential oils, skin protecting natural source vitamin E and soothing organic aloe vera and helps to rehydrate and refresh skin in low-humidity atmospheres, such as airplanes.”
Earle also advises that to prevent skin from becoming dehydrated when travelling, leave your skin make-up free, reapply moisturiser regularly and drink plenty of water to counterbalance the dehydrating and tiring effects of long haul flights.
“I never leave without a travel size jar of our Superskin Moisturiser ($60). This rich, luxurious and fragrance-free moisturiser is specially formulated to help dry skin look and feel rejuvenated. I massage this super-cream into my face, neck and décolletage regularly when flying to prevent my skin from drying out,” says Earle. us.lizearle.com.
Olga Lorencin Northrup, proprietor of the Kinara Skin Care Clinic and Spa, has this advice for dry airplane environments that are naughty, not nice to skin:
“The best solution would be to moisturize with a good peptide product, like Kinara Intense Moisturizer, ($95) because peptides repair dehydrated skin and maintains long-term hydration. Follow up occasionally with a super-hydrating toner, especially on long flights. Kinara Dry Skin Toner ($40) soothes dry, irritated skin instantly allowing your skin to breathe by gently removing excess dead skin, leaving you feeling fresh and glowing.” www.kinaraspa.com.
Mihaela Corcoz, owner of the Belladonna Salon in Beverly Hills, believes a cocktail (no, not that kind)is the best winter skin treatment around. Indulge in one of Corcoz’ “skin cocktails” and you’re sure to attract fans under the mistletoe.
“Priority number one is always eye cream,” says Corcoz, who recommends Eye Believe Liquid Crystal Serum by CosMedix ($90). Next ingredient in the “skin cocktail” is a toner spray, like CosMedix Mystic Hydrating Treatment ($36) www.cosmedix.com. Corcoz then applies a layer of antioxidant-
And, here’s some practical advice from Los Angeles dermatologist and Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the USC School of Medicine, Dr. Jessica Wu, that is sure to keep the season (and puffy eyelids) bright:
“Carry green tea bags with you on the plane. A half hour before landing, ask the flight attendant for hot water and steep a few minutes. Add ice to cool down the bags, and apply cool green tea bags to your eyelids before landing. The green tea has antioxidants and anti-inflammatories to decrease puffiness so you’ll look your best when you land.”
