Chess.com, the largest online chess site, has acquired Chesspark.com. Chesspark.com members will have immediate access to Chess.com using their same login information as all Chesspark.com member accounts have been transferred.
The Chesspark.com founders left in 2008 to work on Collecta.com – a real-time search company. Jean Hoffman, GM of Chesspark.com & Founder of 9Queens.org says “Online chess is a very competitive market, and we are happy to team up with the leading Internet chess destination."
Erik, the owner of Chess.com, said “We’re excited to add the Chesspark members to our family! Chess.com is the largest online chess community and we want welcome these new members to a greater chess world that includes not only the same great live play they got at Chesspark.com, but also the social tools, chess training content, and many other features we have on Chess.com.”
There are dozens of online chess sites, though few have been able to stand out from the crowd. Chess.com is the most visited of all chess sites by a wide margin, but that doesn’t mean there is no competition. When asked if this acquisition was a signal of other future acquisitions and consolidations in the chess market, Erik said, “Even though we’re the biggest site, chess is a tough business. I’m not sure how all of the other players are doing, but I know it isn’t easy for them. We’re always open to bringing more users and features to Chess.com, so it’s possible.”
In addition to the most visited chess site, Chess.com also has the top Facebook chess app, a popular iGoogle gadget, and a Java app for most mobile phones. Chess.com also introduced the Chess.com iPhone App this month.
