Rousettus, LLC, a company focused on designing adaptive sports and yoga equipment for the physically and visually challenged, announced today that its specially designed (patent pending) yoga mat for the visually impaired -- VIYM(TM) -- is now available exclusively at www.rousettus.com.
“After 4 years of research and development, we are able to offer a product that enables those who are often on the sidelines to participate in the healthful benefits of yoga, and to do so in a way that is safe and helps to build confidence, “ said Tracy Curley, Rousettus’ founder and CEO.
Inspired by a blind student, Curley designed the three dimensional yoga mat in order to enable the sightless to ‘see’, giving them a better mental picture of postures and sense of direction as to where they are relative to the mat. Her initial concept was affirmed by testing it successfully in pilot programs at two different schools for the blind. Participating students raved about the mat, saying VIYM made yoga less intimidating and more fun. “In one hour, students learned more than they had in weeks of previous instruction,”
In addition to the mat, those interested can find instructional DVDs, carrying bags and straps as well as learn the inspiring story of Rousettus at www.rousettus.com, a website specially designed (by FiveSeven Studios of Orlando, FL) to be accessible to those with visual impairment or other physical disabilities.
The Yoga Journal recently estimated that 15 million people practice yoga in the U.S., with more than another 9 million aspiring to do so. Simultaneously, the number of people facing blindness or visual impairment also continues to grow, fueled by aging baby boomers and rising cases of diabetes. Rousettus products are intended to help meet the needs of these changing demographics. The company strives to enhance the well-being of those physically and visually challenged by providing adaptive sports products that enable everyone to fully and safely participate in mainstream, healthy activities such as yoga.
