Fact: the FDA does not regulate the cosmetic industry. Synthetic ingedients and man made chemicals that are known to cause cancer in labratory rats and humans are allowable in cosmetics and baby care products because they are in quantities "low enough to be considered safe."
As the public gains awareness thanks to organizations like the (
http://www.ewg.org/) Environmental Working Group, this rationale of "safe" amounts of toxic substances begins to become more and more unacceptable. Increasingly, natural products have come in to high demand, though not all companies are able to product cosmetics with 100% natural ingredients. One up and coming company, (
http://www.florabotanicals.com) Flora Botanicals (Vermont), is producing body care products with nothing but natural ingredients (plant butters, oils, minerals, beeswax, lanolin ingredients)
. Flora Botanicals reported skyrocketing popularity and sales, partly due to the increasing interest in like products and partly because they are able to offer truly 100% natural products unlike larger corporate entities that can only boast partially natural ingredients. Forecasted sales expect to double and triple over the next year because of public demand for these homegrown, smaller companies who are producing high quality natural products.
The prediction for the future of cosmetics is all natural, organic, fair trade, and synthetic free products. Already, with the movement leaning heavily in that direction there is a decline in sales of conventional body care products. The public demands safe products for themselves and their families, with our without the help of the FDA, and it seems for now that small, eco-friendly, all natural, grassroots businesses are meeting that demand.
