Turkey or Goose? One mince pie or two? Brandy butter or rum sauce? For many backpackers on a GAP year abroad these are not dilemmas that have to be dealt with this year.
Good or bad? Certainly the festive season is a time to spend eating with family but this really only applies to Christmas Day and possibly Boxing Day. Although being in Australia means leaving many English traditions behind there are plenty of Australian ones to embrace.
For a Brit there is something odd about spending Christmas Day on an Australian beach in a pair of Bermuda shorts with the sun beating down. Tucking into a lunchtime roast does not have the same allure in temperatures of 30+ degrees!
It is still important for all backpackers to be able to wish their family a Merry Christmas, even from the other side of the world. By joining Lazyshark.com, for free, it is possible to set up a profile, and share gap year travel experiences with friends and family by emailing out journals and uploading travel pictures. Make everyone back in freezing cold England really jealous by posting a picture of you enjoying Christmas on one of Sydney’s many beautiful beaches!
“There was a fantastic atmosphere on Coogee beach at Christmas last year. We all wore Santa hats and sang carols whilst enjoying a few beers in the sun – very surreal! Still managed a full turkey roast in the evening with my godparents and their family” Laura Marsh, a Lazyshark.com member comments.
