CULINARY MARKETPLACE TO OPEN IN BERNAL HEIGHTS

Six Vendors to Showcase Artisanal, Hand-Crafted Culinary Products & Services

SAN FRANCISCO, (December 16, 2009) – With a focus on local, seasonal, and sustainable, a new collaboration of San Franciscans offering artisanal food and food-related services will open a culinary marketplace at 331 Cortland Avenue at Bennington Street in Bernal Heights. Doors will be open from 7am-7pm, seven days-a-week opening by late January 2010.

The marketplace at 331 Cortland is a site-specific vision, designed with the Bernal Heights neighborhood in mind. The venture aims to satisfy the need on the Cortland retail strip for more food-related businesses, especially at lunch time, offering delicious and health-conscious prepared foods to-go, some by Bernal neighbors, including: El Porteño Empanadas, ICHI Lucky Cat Deli, Paulie’s Pickling, and Wholesome Bakery including DEZYS DRINKS, as well as the freshest organic fruit and vegetables by Della Terra Organics for shoppers and local kitchens, and professional knife sharpening services by Bernal Cutlery.

The Vision

Created by longtime San Francisco hands-on small property owner and manager Debra Resnik, the marketplace reflects her vision to offer a space where entrepreneurs can work together toward success.

“I believe in small businesses as the backbone of a good economy and central to creating healthy neighborhoods,” explains Resnik. “Food businesses are most compelling to me for their combination of many positive aspects of life: community, health, sustenance and creativity. The Bernal community is very supportive of local endeavors, and we’re excited to add great value here by providing needed neighborhood services and serving innovative, artisan food to feed the body and soul.”

Resnik began identifying potential vendors after working with La Cocina, the non-profit incubator that primarily helps women start food-related businesses. The experience helped Resnik solidify who she thought would thrive in the environment. She handpicked an eclectic mix of enthusiastic vendors, all poised and ready for the further development of their businesses. Each selection of a vendor pointed to what need was left to fill, and after meeting with many great chefs, caterers, bakers and people with unique food-related business ideas, she narrowed down to the current group.

The Space

The marketplace at 331 Cortland houses six kiosk spaces.  The building will have a low energy impact for a retail space, given that all six vendors will be sharing the 1,000 square foot storefront and all the amenities will be fueled by a solar electric system. Green products and techniques were used in the build-out. All of the vendors will use recyclable and compostable ware.
