Doctors say the simple reason children are so overweight is due to eating too much and exercising too little. Childhood obesity is at epidemic proportions in the United States. It is estimated that 1 in 5 children between the ages of 6 and 17 are overweight. Children are becoming increasingly challenged by their unhealthy weight gain. These extra pounds are translating into many health problems that once were reserved primarily for adults; diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Not to mention the effect on self esteem, ability to participate in activities and overall quality of life.
The last 20 years have seen a shift in the activities that children partake in during their free time. We now have a generation of children who are turning to visual media for stimulation, such as, video games, television and computers. Physical play is no longer the activity of choice. Society in general has become more and more sedentary. In addition, many schools are cutting daily physical education programs.
Pediatricains recommend 1 hour of physical activity a day for children. It is suggested that the best strategy to combat excess weight in children is to improve the diet and exercise levels of your entire family. The challenge can be to find ways to get children excited about exercise.
