Thirteen years of age and the only child of divorced parents, Sultry Smith’s only friends are her kittens, Ellie and Lizzie. During her summer break, Sultry creates a high school website with her usual panache, but realizes she needs help. The lone applicant is Ned, an awkward teen with bright red hair who doesn’t even know how to use a computer! What’s more, he brings his own constant companion Kernal, an enormous St. Bernard, with him to apply for the position.
Sultry reluctantly decides to give Ned and Kernal a chance, and the two become fast friends. When Sultry’s father suddenly stops responding to her emails, Sultry and Ned are left to figure out what has happened. And after a blackout takes away their best technological resources, the two have to revive their own human survival skills.
Paula Anne writes a socially relevant and delightful read encapsulating the emotional turbulence of adolescence, modern-day technology, and family. These teens will capture young readers’ hearts—teens and tweens will readily identify with the characters and hope their story never ends!
