Walter Hetzel is a butcher’s son, thrust into serving his country, while he’s still a very young man.
Hetzel leaves his boyhood home of Chemnitz to train for active duty in Krakow, Poland. After rigorous training under less than desirable conditions, he’s deployed to the Russian front.
Captured by the enemy near Vitebsk and sent to Moscow, Hetzel carves out a place for himself in the POW camp, making friends easily and sharing an unbreakable camaraderie with fellow prisoners. Although he develops lifelong friendships, the devastation and atrocities of war forever mar these relationships, as well as the memories he associates with them.
When Hetzel finally returns home, he finds his small, simple town irrevocably changed, as he is.
Marc Hetzel’s novel is based on true events. Hetzel writes with incredible clarity, expertly capturing the mood, setting, and inner-workings of a young man losing his innocence while being exposed to horrific events and situations.
