PRLog (Press Release) - Dec 15, 2009 -
Tallahassee, FL – When charities are coming at you from every angle this Christmas with different means of donating to their causes, Susan Olive put forward an idea to the Tallahassee homeless shelter (The Shelter) a few months back: to have the occupants draw original art for a set of Christmas cards, and raise money for The Shelter through the selling of the cards. Olive is an employee of We the People, Inc. of the United States (WTP), a Tallahassee-based nonprofit. WTP donated the printing and publishing costs to allow 100% of the proceeds to go directly to The Shelter.

WTP has been making headlines lately for the millions in charitable donations given overseas; most recently a 20 million dollar shipment of relief supplies sent to an orphanage and AIDS clinic in Lusaka, Zambia. Olive, a weekly volunteer at The Shelter, did not just requisition her company to write a check for the cost of this fundraiser, she took it many steps further in coordinating this project: providing the art supplies for the occupants to participate, arranging the judging of submissions, and actively pursuing community partnerships for retail locations of the cards.

WTP stays on the map of local philanthropy in conjunction with paving the road in notable international giving. Their corporate commitment to local and state-level aid is not merely monetary. It is enhanced by their corporate commitment to increase community awareness, even if that means they initiate and lead fundraising projects internally. When Olive was asked what led her to coordinate this fundraiser, she said, “I really have a heart for the homeless. Also, I am very impressed by how well The Shelter is organized and run, but the best part was working with the homeless.” WTP will also be hosting a party for the occupants of The Shelter on December 30th.

This fundraising endeavor will be launched again next year in hopes of gaining even more community partnerships to raise enough money to make a dent in The Shelter’s dire needs for additional space and renovations. The following businesses, churches, and events would like to be recognized for their support in selling cards: Good Shepherd Catholic Church, LifeWay Community Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church and Bookstore, Designing Women, Haute Heads Hair Salon, The Carriage Shop, The Glasshopper and Awards 4U, Dr. Dennis Raitt, DDS, Healthy Solutions Medical Weight Loss, Trinity United Methodist Church, The Alternative Christmas Markets, The Winter Festival on December 19th , and a special thank you to all the individuals that took it upon themselves to sell cards; their generous support was pivotal to this project’s success.
