My favourite pub at the moment is in London. I discovered after reading a review on Adbookr. It is hidden away spot up in Islington. The chef the will rustle up a suckling pig if you book in advance. Always on the menu are old-school meat eater treats like marrow on toast and the surprisingly good crispy pig’s ears. On cold days there are log fires and when the sun’s out it has a big garden, with fruit trees and wisteria. Which is a good thing, not just for us, but also for the bees.

We aren’t the only species threatened by virulent plague. The world’s bee population is in far worse straits, ravaged by the vorroa mite and the mystery Colony collapse syndrome. Adookr estimates the number of bees in the UK has declined by thirty percent and in London by a massive fifty percent in the past few years. Since bees are crucial in plant propagation – by way of context, bee pollination is worth an estimated two hundred million pounds a year to the British economy – apiary is the echo choice du jour.

Nearly one thousand people applied for the sixty places on an introductory beekeeping course displayed on Abookr in South London this year. Scarlett Johanson is leading the trend after having been given her own hives by Samuel Jackson. Commercial hives have been tucked away in all sorts of places, including the roof of the Royal Festival Hall, and Fortnum and Mason recently started selling their own honey from their rooftop hives. So if the whole tented, netting look is not for you, at least place an order for eco-honey. Not only will you be doing your bit for the eco system, but mixed up with hot water, lemon and a shot of whisky it mat even keep swine flu at bay.
