Wednesday basketball teams from Montrose Christian, Roosevelt Senior High, Dematha Christian and Coolidge Senior High School hit the hardwood to fight for bragging rights at the 3rd Annual Caron Butler Classic. The event was held at DC’s Coolidge High School (6315 5th Street, NW).
The action began at 6 p.m. when Montrose Christian and Roosevelt Senior High hit the floor. The gymnasium was packed with the teams’ fellow students, family supporters and NBA and college basketball celebrities including Butler, Washington Wizards Antawn Jamison, Mike Miller and DeShawn Stevenson, as well as Wizards assistant coach Sam Cassell and Duke Basketball Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski, With an ongoing reputation of a strong area high school basketball talent pool, all eyes were on the players of each school who showed their advance basketball acumen and highly competitive play.
At 8 p.m. Dematha Catholic and Coolidge Senior High School took over the hardwood in a rematch from the Classic’s first year. Led by NBA legend Harvey Grant’s two sons Senior Jerian and Junior Jeremy, Dematha stormed to an early lead but Coolidge showed resilience in their defensive moves and offensive attacks. But in the end, Coolidge couldn’t hold Dematha off and they lost a second time.
The event also helped raise funds to support each schools’ athletic program.
“I started this event a few years back, and it is a terrific opportunity for the best area high school basketball teams to compete against each other as well as demonstrate their talents in front of college recruiters and coaches,” said Caron Butler. “Most importantly, and with the help of DTLR, this is a chance to support high school athletics which are vital to kids staying off the street and out of trouble.”
“We are happy to be able to sponsor this event each year,” said Sherri Goodall, Community Outreach Manager for DTLR. “Through our sponsorship we give these kids opportunities that they might not otherwise have. That is what giving back is all about.”
