When It Comes To Weight Loss, If You Focus On Health Everything Else Falls Into Place

Native Houstonian Barb Henley is a success story.  She lost over 110 pounds, and defied the odds by keeping it off.  She has a message for anyone wanting to improve their health – you can reach your health goals in 2010 when you know what to do.

After a family member was diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, Barb knew the stakes had changed.  Someone she loved was at risk of dying from a chronic disease due to obesity.   Barb weighed 245 pounds and she knew the only way to change the tide was to take charge of her health.   She quickly realized the information available is often misleading, confusing and at times outright dangerous.   The weight loss industry is just that; an industry filled with companies ready to make a buck on desperation.   Barb began to research, study and question everything relating to weight loss.  After shifting through the gimmicks, the scams and false promises, Barb found the answers she sought.  She is now sharing this information with others in hope of improving their lives and that of their families.

As We Enter A New Decade:

Question everything.  Just because you see it in print, it doesn’t make it true.  Remember weight loss companies are in business to make money.   The same can be said for many of the supplement companies.  Barb believes you must get involved in the process.   You must work as a team with your health care provider, and personal trainer.   Your involvement is essential for success.

Change your weight loss goal.  Focus on your health goals and everything falls into place.

Develop patience.  It took a long time to get where you are today.  Change comes about quickly, but it is not overnight.

Hold yourself accountable.  When you start a program and it gets hard, stay on track!  If not for yourself, think about those who love you and need you to be around for years to come.  Unhealthy food and inactivity can result in health consequences that can prove tragic.  For parents, remember your children learn by your example.  You can model and teach them how to live healthy or you can put them on the path of obesity.

Get moving!   Barb researched every type of exercise and physical activity out there and settled upon strength and resistance training combined with moderate cardio.   She wanted her body to look sculpted and healthy, not the melted skin look often seen with weight loss.

A healthy diet is paramount.   Learn how to cook food that is good AND tastes good.   Healthy food is not a punishment – it can be as enjoyable as what you are currently eating.

Areas to focus on:   Exercise, eat healthy food,  eat often and correct portions, get quality sleep.  Create your own support team:  family, friends and professionals.   Your health care provider and a personal trainer will guide you to do the right things.  People think they know what to do, but most of what they know is wrong.

About Barb Henley:  After a life long struggle with weight and eventually living as a morbidly obese adult, Barb took charge of her health and body.   Certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a personal trainer, she works with all types of clients, those who want to reduce their weight and those who want to get in shape.  She also speaks to local groups and businesses who want to help employees incorporate healthier lifestyle choices into their routines.
