"China Telecommunications Report Q1 2010" is now available at Fast Market Research

For the first time in the  China Telecommunications Report, we are including two new sections, Mobile Content and Regional Mobile Markets. This is in response to the growing contributions of the valueadded services (VAS) market, as outlined by the major operators, while the expanse of the Chinese mobile market warrants a greater look at the sector on a provincial-level, with some housing populations the size of whole countries. In view of this, we have left our sections on fixed-line, internet and manufacturing unchanged, but will provide a full update in our next quarterly update. Revenues in China's mobile market grew by 15% in 2008 to CNY448.50bn (US$65.6bn), and contributing towards 55% of total telecoms revenues at CNY813.99bn (US$119.1bn), up by 7% in the year. A significant proportion of this revenue growth has been due to new subscriptions reported in the year, as operators expanded their networks into rural areas, largely bereft of mobile services. In the year, the market reported 71.239mn net additions to achieve a penetration rate of 45.9%. However, the contributions made by VAS are the most notable, a trend which is expected to continue into 2009 and beyond as 3G services become available. Although the latest revenues figures for VAS are for H108, they still represent the strong increases being experienced.  China Mobile noted VAS revenues of CNY52.996bn, an increase of 26.4% in the year, and largely led by its services of SMS, ringtones and WAP. To this end, the operator has actively been engaged in further services of mobile music, offering subscribers a large database of songs to download, as well as its mobile paper and Fetion service.  China Unicom's GSM VAS revenues have seen increases of 22% in the year, again due to similar types of services being offered. Meanwhile, we have taken a closer look at some of the key markets on a provincial basis. In our east China sub-section, we study the mobile sectors of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong and Zhejiang; in west China, we look at Chongqing and Sichuan provinces, while for central, we have included Hubei province. The majority of these markets exhibit a strong economic basis; they have, therefore, benefitted from China's open-door policy and have witnessed good growth. However, and this will increasingly be the case, with the economic downturn impacting these markets, which employ significant numbers of migrant workers, local operators are witnessing a decline in revenues from their fixed-line long-distance and mobile services as those populations return to their home towns.
