In a recent survey of owners of residential cleaning companies across the United States and Canada, it appears that the current economic climate has not dampened the holiday gift-giving spirit among clients of these services.
For example, one owner in Washington State reported that one client tips her regular team $500 as a Christmas bonus. Another customer doubles her December cleaning fee as a tip for her team. Two clients who live across the street from one another hold an annual "pizza party" in January for her entire company staff as a way of saying "thank you" for their good service throughout the preceding year. The owner says that about 75% of her clients tip and that her staff usually winds up with between $200 to $400 each in Christmas bonuses.
The owner of a cleaning company in Ontario, Canada says that in addition to cash and gifts her staff receives, one clients has asked to be allowed to attend a staff meeting to express her appreciation to the company's work force in person - a form of appreciation greatly appreciated by cleaning personnel. This owner said that some people might be suprised just much a card and a simple "Thank You" note is appreciated by her staff.
And while Michigan may be one of the hardest hit regions of the country with 15% unemployment during the current period, the owner of a cleaning company in that state reports that about 90% of her clients tip at Christmas, with the highest being a $500 tip to a team of three cleaners.
These examples indicate two things about the residential cleaning business:
