What happening?
The Raiders are fresh from an impressive road victory over the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. They realize their playoff hopes are faint, yet they want to win as many games as possible the rest of the season so that they can save coach Tom Cable's job and build some momentum heading into next season.
Beyond that, the Raiders are hopeful of gleaning more insight into whether Bruce Gradkowski is worthy of re-signing and bringing back as the starter next season and beyond, or until JaMarcus Russell shows he is ready to resume the job full-time. If Gradkowski plays well against the Redskins, it gives him a better shot at keeping the job and makes it even more likely that the Raiders will jettison Russell after this season, if he refuses to take a substantial pay cut.
The Redskins are bolstered by a strong effort against the undefeated New Orleans Saints and intent upon showing that they are better than their 3-9 record indicates. They, too, are hopeful of saving their coach's job and building some positive vibes heading into an uncertain offseason, when big changes are sure to come from impatient owner Daniel Snyder. It will be interesting to watch two teams desperate for an identity and a reason to believe the rest of the season.
The Raiders have yet to follow up an impressive win with another victory the past seven seasons, including twice this season. However, they are as confident as they have been all season and certain that they are ready to clear the next hurdle to turning around their fortunes. The Raiders will keep in extra blockers and roll out Gradkowski on most passing downs in an attempt to neutralize Haynesworth. The Raiders won't have any difficulty clamping down on receivers Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El with Asomugha and Chris Johnson. This is a game the Raiders feel as if they can win, and they will because they know too much is riding upon it for them to have another letdown after a big victory.
