What happening?
Josh Freeman said shortly after the draft that he thought he was a better option at quarterback than Mark Sanchez, who was drafted several spots ahead of him. Now he gets the chance to prove it in a head-to-head matchup.
As tasty as the battle between Freeman and Sanchez is, the more intriguing storyline centers around the Jets, who are still alive, albeit barely, in the hunt for an AFC playoff berth. To get that berth, the Jets will need better play out of Sanchez, who is coming off a knee sprain and has struggled since leading the Jets to a 3-0 start. Sanchez has barely completed 50-percent of his passes and has thrown more than twice as many interceptions (15) as touchdown passes (7) since that fast start, so Freeman may have a point.
Of course, it's not like Freeman has reminded anyone of Joe Flacco or Matt Ryan. He's won just once since taking over as the Bucs starter five weeks ago, and he's coming off a five-pick day against the Panthers. Freeman has some bouncing back to do as well, but this game means a lot more to the Jets than it does to Freeman or the Bucs.
Tampa Bay's defense figures to be a challenge for New York. The Bucs have been playing much better defensively since Coach Raheem Morris took over as the defensive coordinator and tweaked the scheme, so the Bucs are highly capable of putting a dagger into the Jets playoff hopes.
