The league's most classic rivalry is renewed for the 179th time and in the kind of icy elements associated with it: at Soldier Field in December. The weather alone could make the game interesting, whether it's freezing cold, snowing or windy.
It's a huge battle for the Packers, with a wild card at stake as they compete with the Eagles, Cowboys and Giants to avoid being odd man out in January. Green Bay has won four straight since losing back-to-back games to Minnesota and Tampa Bay.
The Bears can play spoiler against an ancient rival, but there is the added incentive of saving coach Lovie Smith's job. Certainly a win over their rivals would go a long way toward achieving this -- if it is at risk.
Bears quarterback Jay Cutler hopes to avoid the nightmare type of game he had in the season opener against Green Bay's 3-4 defense, when he threw four interceptions in a 21-15 loss.
Behind a resurgent offensive line, Rodgers will attempt to pick apart a Bears defense that has been dominated three times by powerful multidimensional offenses. The Packers' offense would certainly appear capable of doing the same type of thing to the Bears' defense that Cincinnati, Arizona and Minnesota did.
Because of injuries, the Bears have been using backups in different positions. They could get another look at 2008 first-round pick Chris Williams at left tackle and Kevin Payne at strong safety. They also could insert defensive end Gaines Adams, acquired from Tampa Bay in October. They haven't given up, but the future has to be in the back of their minds.
