J Roland Kelly mostly known for his series of spoken word indie albums has created a short film in homage to his screenwriting idol Charlie Kaufman and French New Wave cinema.
The two minute two second super-short represents the first short film from J Ro excluding a series of short films he created when he was nine years old.
“I won’t let people say this is my first short film. I made a film called Dinosaur! in elementary school that I’m still intensely proud of,” said J Roland Kelly.
Sleeping with Charlie Kaufman is his first project since J Roland Kelly Marshals Against Karl Rove was released on Barack Obama’s inauguration day, and this short film marks his first release since the end of his yearlong Ecuadorian “writing vacation” earlier this summer.
“Basically, I was holed up in an old exotic hotel in Quito for a year, and I watched a lot of French films. I liked the style of the French New Wave… I think American new media can learn a lot from it, and when I had the chance to make this film with computer generated characters I knew exactly how I wanted to make it strange.”
“I hadn’t written a screenplay for a short [film] in a very long time, so I had to dig deep to one of my earliest writings… but because of this story’s absurdity it had remained one of my favorites, and yes, Charlie Kaufman is still a hero of mine.”
“The film is about the role of third parties in the sexual fantasy life of couples and it applies to all of us,” said J Roland Kelly.
Sleeping with Charlie Kaufman is currently on the festival circuit. It can be seen on tour or at his official site located at: www.j-roland-
