South Australia is a state of Australia in the southern central part of the country. Covering 983,482 square kilometres (379,725 sq mi), it is the fourth largest of Australia's six states and two territories.
A map of South Australia shows it is bordered to the south by the Great Australian Bight and the Southern Ocean. South Australia ranks fifth in population among the states and territories. The majority of people live in the state capital, Adelaide, with most of the remainder settled in fertile areas along the south-eastern coast and River Murray. South Australia was unique in Australia as a freely-settled, planned British province and not a convict settlement. The first city/town to be established was Kingscote, Kangaroo Island in 1836.
Today, South Australia is a state of festivals and of fine wine. The state's economy centres on the agricultural, manufacturing and mining industries and has an increasingly significant finance sector.

Adelaide is the capital of South Australia, and the gateway to the state. It is a coastal city situated on the eastern shores of Gulf St. Vincent, on the Adelaide Plains.
Named in honour of Queen Adelaide, the city was founded in 1836. Colonel William Light designed the city and chose its location close to the River Torrens. A map of Adelaide shows the city is set out in a grid layout, with wide boulevards and large public squares, and is surrounded by parkland.
Adelaide is South Australia's seat of government and commerce, with many governmental and financial institutions concentrated in the city centre along the cultural boulevard of North Terrace, King William Street.
Adelaide is noted for events - festivals, shows and sporting events and food, wine, and culture.
Rundle Mall is a shopper’s heaven, and Adelaide’s Central Market offers the sounds and tastes of the best produce in the state. Tourists to Adelaide can spend time dining at some of the 700 or so fantastic restaurants, cafes and bars in the city. And there is an amazing number of long, sandy beaches all within 20 minutes of the CBD.
