Dec. 10, 2009 - PRLog -- WALDWICK, NJ,  — Icy receptions are an integral part of everyday life for the team at Life Recovery Systems (LRS).  Chilling patients’ core body temperatures is what The ThermoSuit® System was designed to do.  Invented by cardiologist Robert Freedman and biomedical engineer, Robert Schock and developed by LRS and its collaborators, the award winning ThermoSuit® System is the patient cooling device to watch.

Therapeutic Hypothermia is becoming more and more popular in emergency rooms and critical care units around the country and we are seeing it being used more often in various emergency situations.  The ThermoSuit System is growing in popularity with emergency professionals primarily because of its ease of use and excellent safety record.[1]

The ThermoSuit System is cleared by the FDA for rapid patient cooling.  The ThermoSuit cools patients to a target range of 32˚C - 34˚C in about ½ hour.  The ThermoSuit’s ability to cool to target temperatures so quickly, has made it the rapid patient cooling device of choice for many hospitals and critical care facilities in the country.

Several presentations given at the American Heart Association’s 2009 Resuscitation Science Symposium as well as other recent publications have added to the support for the value of rapid cooling.  For example:
•   A review of clinical data from over 100 Minnesota patients showed that a one-hour delay in cooling was associated with a 25% increased rate of death [2].  This result was similar to that reported in a study published by a group of German investigators earlier this year [3]
•   A 200-patient European multi-center study[4] of nasal cooling vs. traditional cooling methods showed an approximate doubling in the rate of neurologically intact patient survival when time to target core temperature was reduced from 4.1 hours to 2.1 hours. Note:  The nasal cooling approach is not available commercially, but the ThermoSuit is available NOW and cools more quickly.
•   A recent review article on this topic noted; “Rapid induction decreases the risks and consequences of short-term side effects, such as shivering and metabolic disorders [5]

These new reports and others like them will likely attract more facilities to employ the ThermoSuit System in order to fulfill their patient cooling protocol requirements.

“The new clinical studies give added support for the value of rapid patient cooling.  The ThermoSuit® is definitely a leader in this area as it reaches target temperatures in about 30 minutes and has no documented complications.  Other surface cooling methods take hours to cool and can result in complications such as frost bite and other skin damage.  Invasive cooling catheters have been associated with complications such as bleeding, deep venous thrombosis and catheter entrapment.” said Robert Schock, Ph.D., Vice President Research and Development.

“In addition to the ThermoSuit®’s speed and excellent safety record, the patient can be removed from the suit and easily transported to any unit in the hospital for necessary treatment.  Outside of the suit, the patient remains cool for hours.” added Dr. Robert Freedman, Jr. Chairman and CEO, Life Recovery Systems.
