Iran: If You Impose Sanctions, We will Stop Cooperating

A member of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee said that Iran is not obligated to fulfill its commitments if the UN Security Council decisions are based solely on "political motivations."

PRLog (Press Release) - Dec 10, 2009 -
A member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian parliament, Kazem Jalali, said yesterday that Iran "will significantly decrease" its willingness to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Association, if the UN Security Council decides to impose sanctions against Tehran.

In an interview with the "Teheran Times", Jalali said that Iran is not obligated to uphold any of the UN Security Council resolutions, if the UN decisions are "purely politically motivated".

The Parliament member clarified that the fact that Iran publicized the existence of the uranium enrichment plant in Qom was proof of Iran's good intentions. Jalali also commented on the resolution adopted on November 27 by the IAEA's Board of Governors, calling on Iran to immediately halt construction at the Qom site. In addition, the IAEA asked Iran "to confirm, as requested by the Agency, that Iran has not taken a decision to construct, or authorize construction of, any other nuclear facility which has as yet not been declared to the Agency."

Jalali told the Mehr News Agency yesterday that the resolution was not based on the agency’s inspections, but was “purely politically motivated”, and was ratified under a pressure from major powers.

Jalali added that the relations between Iran and the United States could be improved if the U.S. provided nuclear fuel for the Tehran research reactor.

Let him keep dreaming…
