ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS - When the Tiger Woods car wreck and subsequent scandal broke in late November 2009, former sportswriter and current author D.L. Shiloh raised his hands and nodded. He'd written about such a fall in his celebrity and sports novel "Pookoo" in 2008. The novel hit the Amazon.com Kindle charts and made it to the Top 10 of the sports category earlier this year.
"It was like, 'I've seen this' and it gave me a certain validation to the work I'd done," Shiloh said, from his home office in northern Illinois. "I don't wish ill will on anyone. But I've said we can be our best friend or our worst enemy. We pick our path."
Shiloh's 1990s work included producing celebrity and expert chats on AOL. Later he became a sports editor.
Shiloh's initial intent was to write a novel "about what happens to the Homecoming King" and "what happens to a sportsman if he loses focus." it grew from there, with all the trappings: a Runaway Media, a wife who's a blond bombshell, mistresses, and sponsors dropping out. It even has a Michael Jackson moment.
"The coincidences are eerie," Homefield Multimedia's Mike Pace said. "D.L. hit the nail on the head, almost like a fortune teller."
Shiloh is currently at work on a new novel titled "Waiting for the End," dealing with a post 9-11 world.
