Renowned ghazal singer Jagjit Singh, who is all set to enthrall his fans in the summer capital with his silken voice tomorrow, today said he was yearning to come to Kashmir valley and perform as he had last paid a visit here more than a decade ago.
"I last visited Kashmir 10 to 12 years back. I was yearning to come here again … to perform, to talk about love," Singh said while addressing a press conference here.
However, he seemed to be disappointed that he would only be able to perform in front of 700 people at SKICC.
"Last time, I had come for a private concert and this time it is semi-private. Just 700 seats are not enough for public….I hope I perform in public next time," Singh said.
Appreciating the initiatives of the Jannat Enterprises and Times Group, who are organizing the Jagjit Singh concert, he said he hoped the organizers would bring more singers to the Valley in future.
"I hope the private companies will call more artists in future as Kashmir is a cultural centre where a poetess like Habba Khatoon has been produced," Singh said.
In his message to the singers of the valley, he said, "There is hope for the singers here if they have the courage and are willing to make sacrifices. I was born in Rajasthan…I had the courage to go to Mumbai…offered sacrifices and then achieved success."
Stating that he was updated over the happenings in the valley through media, Singh urged the local media to shun negative news and encourage "good" works.
"I follow the situation here through news….everywhere negative news is highlighted…
Expressing his love for singing and poetry, Singh said, "Music has got no boundaries…it is a religion in itself. Music itself is a message - full of love just like ghazal, which means talking about love."
Even as the popular ghazal singer was initially reluctant to hum a few lines, he gave in to the pleas of media persons and sang, "Kuch nah kuch to zuroor hona hai, saamna kal aap se hona hai."
