TORONTO, ON - A Brampton, Ontario based company made a significant show of support for the families of Canadian soldiers this past Friday. By pledging $10 for every order they took during Remembrance Week and collecting personal donations from staff and customers, Weston Premium Woods, a division of Weston Forest Group, was able to raise a total of $2,615 for a new charity that supports military personnel and their families. The Canadian Hero Fund is a grassroots charity that launched nationally this past week. The Fund's first goal is to raise money for post-secondary scholarships for the children and spouses of fallen servicemen and women.
"We recognize the sacrifices that our Canadian soldiers are making every single day in order to preserve and protect our way of life, here at home." said Peter Ekstein, CEO of Weston Forest Group, in a letter to the Fund. "We also sympathize, feel for and pray for the families that have made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our freedom... We could not think of a better way to show our appreciation than by contributing this money towards the education of the children of our fallen soldiers."
The Canadian Hero Fund hopes to raise $2.5m over 5 years towards its scholarship program, which will help the children and spouses of fallen soldiers attend university, college or professional school. "We were truly inspired by this show of support," said Michael Ball, executive member of the Fund. "The Canadian Hero Fund is about communities supporting military families and recognizing their sacrifice. The donation drive at Weston Premium Woods is a perfect example of a how a community can demonstrate its care for the families of fallen soldiers while making a positive impact on their lives."
Founded by university students in 2009, the Canadian Hero Fund is a registered charity dedicated to assisting military families, with a focus on grassroots initiatives and youth engagement. The motto “Keeping Their Dreams Alive” stands for the dreams of the families and children that are sustained through Canadian Hero Fund support programs, as well as the dreams of fallen soldiers who wanted more for future generations.
