The Murcia Youth Symphony Orchestra of Spain, led by conductor Virginia Martinez, will perform a free concert at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall located at 1941 Broadway in New York City on Saturday, December 12 at 8 p.m.

The program includes Gimenez’s “Luis Alonso’s Wedding,” Falla’s “Three-Cornered Hat, Suite 2” and Mahler’s “First Symphony.”

More than 100 members of the internationally acclaimed ensemble, all under the age of 23, will perform during the group’s only New York concert. Based in Murcia, the Southeastern coastal region of Spain, the all-Spanish youth orchestra serves as a training ground for the country’s instrumentalists. Hundreds of talented youths have passed through the program since it was established in 1981; today many of them hold posts in established conservatories and orchestras in Spain and beyond.

In keeping with its youthful tradition, the orchestra is led by a relative youngster in conducting circles. Martinez, herself hailing from Murcia, joined the orchestra in 2006. She is a much sought after conductor and has led a number of prestigious orchestras in Spain since her professional conducting debut in 2003. In 2004, she was named Youth of the Year by the Youth Council of the Region of Murcia. She was recently named one of the top 100 young European talents, a distinction awarded by the European Regions Committee.

The single performance at Lincoln Center is part of the group’s North American tour. After its New York appearance, the group will travel to Chicago, where it has been invited to be a featured performer at the Mid-West Orchestra Clinic convention. The orchestra has previously toured extensively throughout Spain as well as in Europe and China.

Tickets must be picked up in advance from the box office, which is open Monday–Saturday 10–6, Sunday Noon–6. Call the box office at 212.671.4050.
