"We think of CNR as a combination of credible news and community-generated sites like Wikipedia." says Chief Editor Sarah Fenwick. "The idea is to have professional journalists generating the core news, and user-generated content from socially aware activist groups like non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as well as contributions from subscribers interested in having their say."
CyprusNewsReport.com is currently still in the first stages of development, she adds, and went live in August 2009. The site has coverage on Cyprus Politics, People, Environment, Business and Education as well as a Classifieds section. Unlike most of the media in Cyprus, CNR is environmentally conscious and does not have an offline print version, which also leads to lower costs.
As part of its launch, CNR is running a Young Journalist / Writer Contest for young writers aged 18-26. One winning entry per month will be published on www.cyprusnewsreport.com. For more information on the contest, visit http://www.cyprusnewsreport.com/?
In the next stage of development, subscribers will have their own accounts and be able to add content such as Blogs, stories of interest to them, Fora and Classifieds. Subscribers are expected from the large expatriate community and English speakersin Cyprus, as well as Cypriots living and studying abroad. The number of visitors to the site is growing rapidly, with about 50% coming from abroad.
