Pandurang Hegde has been working to protect the rich forests of Karnataka. The crucial lessons that he learnt from his involvement with the Chipko movement motivated him to return to his home town of Sirsi in Uttara Kannada to launch a formidable people-centric movement called Appiko (meaning Hug the Trees) on September 8, 1983. The Appiko movement played a key role in protecting many forests from the axe in the Western Ghats region.
Pandurang Hegde continues to organise communities against so-called development that erodes their livelihood support base. He works with villagers in addressing their core concerns on sustainable harvest of non-timber forest produce extraction as well. Pandurang has earned a unique distinction in the world of environmental conservation, both in India and abroad, and was instrumental in launching Appiko in Japan in 2008.
