What happening?
These two losing teams have a lot left to play for over the final five games of the season, namely the future of their front offices. The 49ers started 3-1, but have fallen to 5-6 because their offense simply doesn't have the offensive firepower to keep pace with opponents as evidenced by the fact San Francisco is 5-0 when it allows 16 points or fewer, 0-6 when it allows more than 16. San Francisco needs a strong finish to validate that improvement has been under coach Mike Singletary. The Seahawks have a chance to win back-to-back games for the first time all season. Only one of Seattle's final five opponents currently has a winning record.
Can the Seahawks win enough to earn Tim Ruskell a return as team president after the franchise's steady decline under his five-year tenure? The Seahawks won last week despite gaining more yards on the ground than through the air, and second-year player Justin Forsett has shown signs of becoming a capable every-down back by surpassing 100 yards rushing in two of the past three games.
Meanwhile, San Francisco is trying to find a spark on offense. Switching quarterbacks hasn't helped. The 49ers were 3-3 with Shaun Hill as the starter and averaged 22.2 points. They are 2-3 with Alex Smith as the starter, averaging 19 points. Signing Michael Crabtree didn't change all that much, either. He has caught 26 passes and one touchdown since signing in midseason.
