What happening?

Coming off tough losses, both teams are in the thick of the AFC playoff race, making this a crucial matchup.

The Jaguars currently lead the race for the second wild-card slot. With the same record (6-5) as Baltimore and Pittsburgh, the Jags own the tiebreaker by virtue of their 5-2 conference record. Houston, at 5-6, is one game out along with Tennessee, Miami and the New York Jets. So a Texans victory would improve their postseason chances while jeopardizing Jacksonville's.

Houston's offense is one of the best in the league (373 yards per game), while Jacksonville's defense is one of the worst (349.5) -- and its top cover corner, Rashean Mathis, isn't likely to play for the third consecutive game. That's not good for a team facing a Texans offense that features wide receiver Andre Johnson, who is on the verge of his fourth 1,000-yard season.

The Texans have lost five games this season by eight points or fewer, including two decided at the one-yard line, two decided by last-second missed field goals and one in which they led by 17 points in the second quarter. Houston suffered a Sept. 27 loss to Jacksonville when running back Chris Brown fumbled in the end zone, and Daryl Smith recovered to seal the win for the Jags.

So the teams appear to be on the same level in terms of talent. The playoff implications and division rivalry make for an even more compelling matchup.

What happening?

The Jags lament that they went away from their run-first philosophy in last week's loss to San Francisco. So you can expect to see plenty of Jones-Drew against a Texans defense that has struggled all year against the run.

By establishing the run, the Jags will open up the passing game and misdirection-based plays such as the bootleg that will allow Garrard to find the club's underrated receiving corps on the move.

Houston, meanwhile, will likely attempt to spread out Jacksonville's defense with four-receiver sets and operate out of the shotgun to exploit Jacksonville's shaky secondary. Whichever team establishes its offensive game plan first will likely set the tone and control the game.

Jacksonville's coaching staff will devise some wrinkles to defend the pass while getting back to its smash-mouth philosophy on offense with Jones-Drew as the centerpiece. Look for a big day from Jones-Drew and receiver Mike Sims-Walker. Schaub will likely have a big game for the Texans, but the Jags will probably bracket Johnson all day to keep him from making a significant impact.
