ACTING UNDER the DOT and COAI directive, the Indian government has banned over 25 million Chinese handsets having fake IMEI codes. This stands in contrast to the fact that Indian telecom retailers and manufacturers can continue imports of branded and genuine IMEI china mobiles as certified by Directorate General of Customs and Foreign Trade.
The MSAI had initiated the appointment of genuine IMEI implantation centres at 1600 locations nationwide and the deadline for implementation of genuine IMEI was December 1. Telecom providers have approached the government for an extension for IMEI implementation, which has been declined as of now.

" All the banned china mobiles are actually smuggled in via the sea route through chennai & borders of Arunachal pradesh, resulting in millions of phones having same IMEI number, forcing the Indian Government to take strict action against such importers" said Mr. Ammeet Nayak, CEO Indian Operations Head for Geek IT.
