Readers will empathize with Arroyo’s rants about the futility of love, her lament on the loss of innocence and her analysis of the true meaning of writer’s block. Arroyo’s perspective is both familiar and surreal, as she shares her deepest thoughts in both a dark and a humorous vein.
She has been shaped by her writing. “I hope the printed word never dies. I cannot imagine a world without bound books; there is something intoxicating about the tangible aspect of books that I don’t think a computer will ever replace. If you’re an avid reader like me, you know books just have a certain scent.”
Her poems employ vivid imagery, as Arroyo reveals messages about life, death and everything in between. She says, “I write because it is a way for me to confront a lot of my more negative emotions … poetry in particular is my catharsis; it’s a good way for me to control the demons in my head. To me, poetry is tangible and I often look at poems the same way I do photographs, as a snapshot capturing a moment.”
