MISSISSAUGA, ON -The Surgical Weight Loss Centre (SWLC) has been dedicated to offering safe and effective treatments for obesity since it first opened its doors in 2005. On November 13th 2009, the leading weight loss clinic in Canada reached a milestone when Dr. Christopher Cobourn, medical director and surgeon of SWLC, performed a Lap-Band procedure on a 16 year old patient from Burlington, Ontario for the treatment of morbid obesity. The unidentified patient and her parents decided to proceed with the Lap-Band procedure after several attempts with various commercial weight loss programs and the inability to sustain weight loss and improve her health. There have been many reports in the scientific literature showing that Lap Band surgery is a safe and effective therapy for sustained weight loss in adolescents. SWLC has chosen to establish a program to offer this procedure to adolescents in Canada. The Lap-Band is a minimally invasive procedure and has been performed on over 500,000 patients worldwide.
Childhood obesity which has continued to increase into adulthood has been a growing concern worldwide. The prevailing epidemic among childhood obesity affects 1 in 4 children in Canada. According to Statistics Canada during a six year study, approximately 14% of girls and 11% of boys were termed medically obese. As physical activities in children continue to decrease, the rates in overweight and obesity continue to rise. In the past 25 years, obesity rates for adolescents aged 12 – 17 have tripled according to Statistics Canada.
