The world's most famous Christmas tree will be illuminated tonight for the first time this holiday season, and Shakira (and her truthful hips) will be on hand to help kick off the excitement.
So, if you hadn't intended to be in Rockefeller Center this evening, change your plans. The 77th annual tree lighting is an event you don't want to miss.
Festivities begin at about 6:45 p.m., with performances by celebrities and musicians, including Alicia Keys, Shakira and Barry Manilow. Two hours later, the 30,000 light bulbs hanging from the 10-ton Norway spruce will be ablaze in colors of red, green and yellow, and the holiday season will officially kick into full gear.
"My dad was born in Manhattan and I never had the chance to perform at the tree lighting ceremony, so it is … a new, exciting experience,"
If you can't make it for the fun, don't worry. There will be a televised special featuring all the performances as well as the tree lighting. You may even get to see the Rockettes' long legs kick up high in the air and watch skaters perform in the Rockefeller Ice Rink.
