To mark International Volunteer Day on December 5, youth development charity, Lattitude Global Volunteering is recognising its volunteers both in the UK and abroad who contribute over 40,000 volunteer hours every week.
Established 38 years ago as GAP Activity Projects, Lattitude is the original gap year charity, supporting international volunteering for 17-25 year olds. Over 1,500 young people take up the challenge to volunteer abroad each year with Lattitude.
“Young people don’t often receive positive press and as International Volunteer Day is about celebrating and raising awareness of volunteering achievements, it is important to recognise and thank all Lattitude volunteers for their contributions to communities around the world” comments Paul Rompani, CEO of Lattitude Global Volunteering. “I hope it might also inspire others to get involved in volunteering projects overseas”.
Lattitude has been working with some of its partner groups and organisations for many years and volunteers worldwide currently contribute over 40,000 volunteer hours per week.
With headquarters in the UK (Reading) and offices in Australia, Canada and New Zealand, Lattitude is a global organisation providing meaningful and structured volunteering placements that enable young people to develop their skills and broaden their education.
The overseas element allows intercultural experience, and promotes a greater awareness and understanding of the world and an individual’s role as a global citizen.
“Lattitude Global Volunteering is the only charity of its kind to bring volunteers into the UK as well as sending them away to other countries” adds Paul. “It is a truly international organisation, creating a global community of young volunteers and enriching the lives of both the volunteers and the communities in which they work”.
Placements in the UK and Ireland include caring, outdoor activities, environmental and field studies and teaching assistance. International Lattitude volunteers visit the UK from countries as diverse as Argentina, Brazil, China, Ecuador, Hungary, South Africa, and India.
The charity offers a wide range of bursaries for young people in difficult financial circumstances and provides support for fundraising, to allow as many people as possible to benefit from the valuable overseas volunteering experience.
