In her 8 year career Erica Warren has worked in 4 industries, at 7 jobs, been laid off twice and lived in 5 cities. Now, there’s one more line to add to that list – she was laid off again in June 2009, making this her third layoff. In spite of all of that, this resilient Atlanta Generation X’er is not afraid of this economy. Erica has embraced her recent layoff by creating a mental stimulus package to combat hopelessness and in these uncertain times. She wrote and self published her first book, “The Creator in You: You are not Helpless” to remind others of the power we have even in challenging times. Against the odds and despite the current climate Erica is clear that her future is in her hands and not the economy’s.
In her 8 year career, Erica has experienced more change and uncertainty than her Baby Boomer parents ever dreamed of. It’s reflective of her generation. Those in Generation X and even Y are far more equipped to navigate change than previous generations. According to About.com those in Generation X are “…independent, resourceful and self-sufficient, they are the “… first generation to grow up with computers, technology woven into their lives.” In fact, Erica had her first computer in elementary school, remembers their first laptop that was so huge they had to pack in a suitcase for travel and even remembers the first two way pager her dad had at his job with IBM - it was as big as a her lunchbox.
Because according to About.com those in Generation X are “…less committed to one employer and more willing to change jobs to get ahead than previous generations”
In this tightening economy, writing a book would seem like the last move to make yet it was Erica’s first move. “I just saw such hopelessness in people’s eyes and writing this book was my way to give them hope,” said Erica. Her advice to anyone who is thinking about making a dramatic move in this economy, “don’t be afraid to step out, be practical about how you do it, but never be afraid of starting”.
