WWI and WWII changed the lives of ordinary citizens, and Ursula’s family was no exception. As men died in battle by the millions, women were left to cope with the hardships and devastation of war, with broken lives and families torn apart. Ursula, insatiably curious and a keen observer with an innate sense of self, is forced in her early years to gain a perception of who she is through her mother, a beautiful but repressive, insensitive, and punishing woman, while her father is fighting in the war. At war’s end, he becomes a prisoner of the Russians. When he finally returns after eleven years, Ursula feels estranged from him. She loved him as a little girl, but war had changed him.
Aunt Lidia, her mother’s sister, is Ursula’s saving grace. Her revealing stories give Ursula insight into the remarkable lives of her family’s women, who survive hardships more severe than hers. Through these gripping stories and with her own intelligence, Ursula finds her own beliefs, gains her independence and recognizes her self-worth.
