A Riveting Historical Novel Transcends the Bounds of Time and Place

People of the Bear Mother is an enthralling tale of a young woman’s spiritual journey of self-discovery into the depths of Europe’s greatest and oldest painted cave.

Dec. 1, 2009 - PRLog -- In mysterious rites, Little Bear is initiated into the lore and ancient wisdom of the People of the Bear Mother by the tribe’s oldest shaman. These initiations in the cave’s deepest chambers are to prepare her to make a new image in the Great Cave where no new animal art has been painted for millennia. Ill-prepared for this overwhelming experience, it nevertheless changes every aspect of Little Bear’s life and will shape all the subsequent incarnations her soul will live.

The story is set in an ancient hunting culture where the spirit-powers are ever present and social distinctions between people barely exist. In Little Bear’s world, being born male or female, heterosexual or “two spirited” were simply different ways of being fully human. We are shown a way of living where status differences are irrelevant to every woman and man having a meaningful and empowered life. Little Bear’s relationships with wise teachers, her parents, destined encounters with male and female lovers, and the stunning art of the cave all reveal timeless truths of the human heart, mind and spirit that resonate in our lives today.

In this thrilling and soul-touching novel, ancient fact meets with otherworldly wisdom to create an epic tale that spans lifetimes, incarnations and millennia. The story builds to an unexpected, page-turning climax and is a must read for anyone who enjoyed Jean Auel’s classic, Clan of the Cave Bear.

Jonathan Young, Founding Curator of the Joseph Campbell Archives says of People of the Bear Mother, “This is truly a mythic tale that will remain in the imagination for a lifetime.”
