The Southern Maryland Higher Education Center (SMHEC) has announced plans to offer two of Harrisburg University of Science and Technology's master of science degree programs beginning in summer 2010.
Plans are to start the Harrisburg University Learning Technologies Master of Science (LTMS) degree program and the Information Systems and Engineering Management (ISEM) degree program at the SMHEC campus at 44219 Airport Road, California, Maryland.
The SMHEC was established by the State of Maryland in 1994 to provide a regional facility with state of the art technology to serve the university and professional training needs of the Southern Maryland region. Today, the Center hosts over 90 graduate university degree programs and 13 bachelor completion degree programs, presented in their entirety at SMHEC by ten distinguished university partners in the professional fields of engineering;
In addition to Harrisburg University, SMHEC’s university partners include: Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland College Park, University of Maryland University College, George Washington University, The Catholic University, Towson University, The College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Gratz College, Capitol College, and Webster University.
The 36-semester credit hour LTMS program is an ideal fit for the region as The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation’s Division of Workforce Development and Adult Learning projects almost 70,000 openings by 2016 in the categories of “education, training, and library occupations,”
The LTMS program provides students with leading edge approaches and skills to help them apply existing and emerging learning technologies in a variety of learning environments. A key element of the Learning Technologies master’s degree is the use of technology to integrate and develop new ways of learning and assessing learning, as well as exploring new approaches to work, especially to collaborative work. The degree is a blend of theory and practice which develops skills that can be applied to complex education and training issues.
The ISEM program at the University can help bring into existence a new class of professionals with the capability to support the shift in business activity throughout Maryland, and globally, from custom information technology toward integrated, components-based information systems.
The ISEM program will prepare individuals for positions such as systems engineers, business systems analysts, management analysts, software engineers, information systems managers, security planners and managers, and E-government and E-business specialists, as well as future job classifications which may not yet have emerged in this field.
In line with these target occupations, the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing & Regulation’s Division of Workforce Development and Adult Learning projects that by 2016 over 32,500 job openings in Maryland will be available in the combined categories of computer and information systems managers, engineering managers, software engineers, computer systems analysts, network systems and data communications analysts, and management analysts. Southern Maryland also projects high growth rates in “professional, scientific, and technical services” job classifications. In fact, this particular industry subsector is the largest private industry subsector in Southern Maryland, with 10,126 jobs; and it is within the top five industries that were projected for growth in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties in 2008. In the Tri-county region by 2016 it is projected that the demand for software engineers will increase 50% and the demand for computer systems analysts will increase approximately 36%. Graduates of the ISEM program can touch on all of these job classifications.
Representatives from this Master of Science in Information Systems Engineering and Management degree will be present at the March 25, 2010 SMHEC Open House from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. SMHEC is located at 44219 Airport Road, California, Maryland.
