Nov. 30, 2009 - PRLog -- (Port St. Lucie, FL) – The PSL Sunset Rotary’s first Golf Collection Program has created a tremendous response from the community.  The club created the program to collect used golf equipment to benefit Port St. Lucie High School’s Boys’ Golf Team.  The team had been sharing a small collection of clubs due to the local government’s cutback on funding resulting in the team’s inability to buy the necessary equipment for the kids.  Rotary Secretary, Larry Breault and PSL HS Golf Coach, Tony Malizia coordinated this effort together to help these students in their quest to learn patience, commitment, and networking skills through the mastery and competitive play of golf.

With people responding from as far away as Vero Beach, Rotary members scrambled to set up collection locations. When it was all said and done, the collection resulted in about 900 golf clubs, 8 sets of women’s clubs, 35 golf bags, 1,000 golf balls, and other assorted golf paraphernalia.  The equipment will go to the Port St. Lucie High School Golf Program.  The excess equipment not used by the school will go to the newly formed program, The First Tee of the Treasure Coast.  The First Tee provides young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop life-enhancing values such as confidence, perseverance and judgment through golf and character education. Go to www.TheFirstTee.org to learn more.

In addition to collecting equipment, the PSL Sunset Rotary presented Coach Malizia a check for $200 for his Golf Team.

Thanks go out to Aycock Funeral Homes, TopGrading Solutions, ReMax of Stuart, Southern Stitches,  Stevens and Stevens Computer Network Services, Edwin Watts, S.A.H. Dentistry, and Eagle Marsh Golf Club for providing drop-off locations.

A special thanks to Paul Howley, owner of Eagle Marsh and Manager of Club Med Sandpiper, for donating many of the facilities and allowing the program to stage its mass donation.

The Port St. Lucie Sunset Rotary is a local branch of Rotary International. The PSL Sunset Rotary was formed in 2007 and meets the first and third Thursday of each month at 6 PM in the Greenside Tavern in Sandpiper Golf Club.  Those interested in membership can download an application on line at www.pslsunsetrotary.com  or call Larry Breault at (772) 631-7109.
