Launch Your Drives Like a Pro!
At Cote Golf Instruction, I consistently have students asking how they can get more distance on their drives and 85% of the time they don’t receive the answer they are looking for. I’ll explain. I start by asking them if when if they receive the distance they are looking for when they connect perfectly and 85% of the time they say yes. That said, I think we should work on making solid contact first.
A Pro Set Up - A driver is supposed attack the ball on the upswing, so let’s get some set up fundamentals correct before talking swing speak. The ball position for a driver is played in line with the left heel and the stance should be shoulder width. I like 70% of your weight on the right foot (promotes staying behind the ball) and last but just as important GET YOUR SHOULDERS SQUARE. Getting your shoulders square will do wonders for helping you swing from the inside. Your arms should hang down naturally, then clap hands together as if you’re in preying and that is the distance your hands should be from your body. I like the ball teed up with the equator of the ball even with the top of the clubface.
Stay Back To Get Ahead - Here is a great drill to make sure you are keeping your head behind the ball at impact, which will allow you to hit the sweet spot more often launching the ball high with low spin.
HIGH WIRE DRILL:
1. Stand in our new set up position, but now put your feet 2” apart
2. Ball is now in line with left toe not the heel
3. Tee the ball up properly
4. Take practice swing to get used to your new stance
5. Practice hitting balls using 60% of your speed
Notes – As your making swings get the feeling in your hips and shoulders are turning around a fixed neck. This will allow your arms to swing the club more naturally and make contact with the ball in a more consistent and powerful manner. Don’t be surprised to see the ball fly 90% of your normal distance utilizing this drill. When you feel like you’re hitting the ball pretty well now move into your normal (feet apart) set up and GET THE SAME FEEL/SHOULDERS AND HIPS TURNING AROUND A FIXED NECK POSITION.
Thanks for letting me bend your ear about the greatest game ever played!
