Almi’s amazing life journey begins when the 19 year old young woman leaves her parents’ farm on Estonia’s largest island of Saaremaa. She leaves her home to find work in the mainland capital of Tallinn.
A year later, Almi meets Aleksander, her soon-to-be husband and eventual father of her six children. By war’s end, the little family is migrating back to Saaremaa on foot, and when they are lucky, by donkey cart or army truck. They are frequently forced to take shelter in a barn, under a tree or in deserted homes. From there, Almi and her rapidly expanding family flee Estonia to avoid the incoming communists. Her remarkable journey filled with adventure, obstacles and the strength of family, continues on to Sweden and later to South Africa.

About the Author:
Tiiu Kleyn was five when her parents fled Estonia and eventually ended up in Cape Town, South Africa with all the family’s belongings packed in a small wooden box. Tiiu’s mother, Almi, originally wrote her story in Estonian and Tiiu translated it into English, resulting in Almi, A Refugee.
