Molly was born an illegitimate child to 17-year-old Fiona.
Fiona wasn’t interested in settling down or raising a child. With an endless parade of abusive boyfriends in and out of her life, Molly was the last thing on her mind. But Fiona’s mother, or as Molly called her “Nan,” loved Molly very much and raised her as her own while the two lived with her.
Fiona moved her little girl out of Nan’s house when Molly turned three years old. Molly’s formative years were spent watching her mother being abused by men, and oftentimes, Molly was left to fend for herself. She was abused, neglected and even hungry at times. Little Molly was exposed to adult situations far earlier than she should have been. As a result, Molly learned that anger could protect her and that emotion became part of who she was. When Molly was severely beaten and taken to the hospital, she met Sergeant Thompson, a kind man, who made it his mission to ensure that Molly would have a better life.
Sergeant Thompson helped Nan take care of Molly and Molly was able to escape her mother’s destructive lifestyle and behavior. A tragedy occurs when Molly is a young teen and Sergeant Thompson and his wife take Molly in and love her as their own.
Molly must learn how to relate to and receive love without conditions. As she lets go of a scarred past and the anger that she believed protected her, she learns that there is hope. Love, she learns, is not measured out in harsh words and slaps but flows freely and, with it, hurts can be healed and lives transformed.
